SIP Trunks Explained
SIP - Session Initiation Protocol
A SIP trunk is a service offered by an ITSP (Internet Telephony Service Provider) that permits businesses that have a PBX installed to use Voice-over-IP (VoIP). A trunk includes multiple voice sessions - as many as the business needs.
SIP also offers benefits outside of the local area network (LAN). It can connect satellite offices, remote workers and even customers.
Geography is no longer a barrier to communications. Calls can be transferred between towns, even between countries as though the people involved were sitting next to each other.
New numbers worldwide
You can purchase a number to use on your SIP Trunk which can be from anywhere in the world. For instance, if you were doing business in France you could have a French number for your customers to call. This would come straight through to your UK offices.
This not only helps with call costs (and credibility) with your customers but will also reduce your outgoing costs in the specified country.
You can have as many different numbers as you want all terminating in the same place. You can specify routing for all of your outbound traffic to take advantage of the lowest rates (Least Cost Routing).
